Rainfall Insurance Scheme for Coffee Growers (RISC)
The Agricultural Insurance Company of India Ltd, introduces Rainfall Insurance Scheme for Coffee Growers (RISC), a weather insurance scheme to provide insurance cover for possible coffee yield losses arising out of rainfall risks. The risks covered are deficiency in rains during Blossom and Backing periods as well as excess rains during Monsoon Period (July and August in Karnataka). Coffee Rainfall Insurance provides insurance protection to the extent of Rs.30,000 per Ha for Arabica and Rs.20,000 per Ha for Robusta. Coffee Board offers 50% subsidy subject to maximum of Rs.2,500 per Ha for Arabica and Rs.2,000 per Ha for Robusta, to the small growers (owing 10 Ha or less of coffee) on the premium amount. The RISC is available without Coffee Board subsidy to all other coffee growers.
Coffee Rainfall Insurance can be purchased from the authorized representatives of Agricultural Insurance Company of India Ltd. (AIC) who can be contacted at each of the coffee growing zones.
Rainfall Insurance for Monsoon showers (can be purchased only till 30th June 2007) during the current season.
The salient features of the monsoon cover are that it offers insurance against excess rainfall and insurance payout would start if rainfall occurs at a minimum of 35 mm per day consecutively for more than 7 days during July and August. The pay-out shall be made as per the following triggers:

The premium amount varies from zone to zone. Table.1 and 2 summarize the premium payable by the growers as well as the reference rain gauge station.
Coffee Rainfall Insurance claims will be automated based on actual rainfall data received by AIC from the designated Reference Rain-Gauge Stations. The insured growers need not prove the losses or submit any claim documents. Claims under Coffee Rainfall Insurance will be paid within 45 days from the end of the insurance period.
