The Fine Cup Award - Cupping Competition 2004

Subsequent to the announcement of Rules and Procedures for Cupping Competition 2004 in the December 2003 issue of Indian Coffee, the following important changes have been effected regarding the Cupping Competition, based on the decision of the Consultative Committee.
  1. Last date of collection of samples has been extended till Friday, March 26, 2004 in view of the reports of delayed ripening of coffee in many regions.
  2. Special category of awards: It was decided to institute special category of awards for arabica whole crop cherry entries. With this decision the total number of prizes for the competition will be as below:
    • Flavour of India - the Fine Cup Award: 3 no. (Arabica, Robusta and Specialty)
    • Special Prizes: 6 no (Best in MNEB, RKR, Monsooned Malabar, Arabica Cherry, Robusta Cherry and Certified Organic Categories)
    • Best Regional Coffees: (Arabica and Robusta samples from each region from among the samples collected for the final round)
    • Certificate of merit for all other samples reaching the final round.
  3. Venue for the Finals: The final round of cupping by International Jury is proposed to be held at Trieste, Italy on 18th June 2004, to coincide with the World Barista Championship. The International jury will comprise f a panel of 12 expert cuppers, of which 6 will be from Europe and 2 cuppers each from USA, Japan and India.
  4. Additional Category of Entries: If any grower is interested to submit samples of pulped naturals (semi washed) the same will be accepted under washed category.
  5. Collection of Samples: The samples for the competition can be handed over directly by the growers themselves at Coffee Board Head Office, Bangalore, if they desire so. However, the samples should have been collected by the identified Coffee Board's Liaison Officer who is solely responsible for sealing the sample bags and allotting a regional number for the same.

Except for the above changes, the rules and procedures for the cupping competition will remain the same as published earlier. The growers may kindly take note of the above important changes for the forthcoming cupping competition.
