For the third consecutive year, the Annual India Barista Championship Competition is organised in Bangalore by the Specility Coffee Association of India (SCAI). Coffee Board is the main sponsor of this prestigious competition to select the No.1 Barista of the country and to give encouragement to more and more young Baristi.

The unique feature of the event is that the No.1 winner of this competition will be sponsored by SCAI to represent India in the World Barista Championship (WBC) being held in Trieste (Italy) in June 2004. SCAI would bear his travel costs.

In the preliminaries and semi finals of the event, which were held in Hotel Taj Gateway, Bangalore on 21st and 22nd January, 2004 a total of 22 Barista from various coffee companies of the country participated. In the prelims, each contestant was offered the opportunity to prepare 4 cups each of two types of coffees - Espresso and Cappuccino- in ten minutes time, which was judged by a panel of eminent coffee Cup Tasters headed by Mrs. Sunalini N. Menon. Out of this, 14 of them qualified for the semi finals.

In the semi finals, the contestants were to prepare 4 cups each different drinks- Espresso, Cappuccino and a Signature drink in 15 minutes time, which was adjudged by a different panel of experts as jury. Six contestants emerged successful as Finalists.

The finals will be held on 9th February, 2003 at Hotel Grand Ashok, Bangalore. The winner will be presented with the cash award and a Coffee Board sponsored rolling trophy at a function the same day evening. The jury at the finals to select country's top Barista would include renowned cuppers from abroad.

The champion Barista would get the Platinum rolling trophy, a cash award of Rs. 15,000/- and return air ticket to Trieste to participate in WBC. Position No. II(Gold), No. III (Silver) and No. IV (Bronze) Barista will be awarded trophies and cash prizes of Rs. 20,000/-, Rs. 10,000/- and Rs. 5,000/- respectively. The contest will also judge the best Barista Technique, Best signature Drink and Best Communication Skill each of which will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 2,500/- and a certificate.
