Indian Coffee at Alimentaria' 06

The Coffee Board participated in the Alimentaria' 06 held in Barcelona, Spain between 6th and 10th of March 2006. Spain is an important coffee market in the Europe and in fact is one of the biggest espresso market in Europe. Robusta accounts for nearly 50% of total coffee exports to Spain which is around 2.5 million bags per annum.

As far as India is concerned, coffee exports to Spain is showing positive growth in the last 4 years and Robusta accounts for over 90% of Indian coffee exports to Spain. Indian Robusta Cherry AB is the most preferred grade and is recognized as one of the premium grades in the preparation of espresso blends.

Alimentaria' 06 was held in two locations and the Board's stall was located in the coffee pavilion. The Board put up an impressive stall and the theme of the stall was on our USP i.e. Shade grown, Hand picked and Sun Dried and also our Unique Robustas.

Over 50 leading coffee importers/roasters visited the Board's stall and showed business interest to source coffees from India. Premium Indian coffee grades, specially Robusta grades were displayed and liquid coffee made out of Indian coffee blends were served to the visitors.

Brochures in Spanish on Indian coffee, exporter directory CDs, Coffee Karma Film CDs were distributed to Spanish coffee fraternity.

It was evident from the interest shown by the Spanish coffee fraternity on Indian coffee that, we need to aggressively pursue the good will gained by our Indian Robustas as high quality coffees to augment our exports in the future. Towards this, sustained participation in important coffee events, organizing cupping sessions and buyer seller meets involving our exporters in Spain in coming years will go a long way to maintain and sustain the visibility and also our market share in this important European market. Shri. E. P. Ramanarayana, Technical Officer, organised and conducted the participation of the Coffee Board at the event.
