Flavour of India-The Fine Cup Award - Cupping Comeptition-2007

The fifth Cupping Competition-2007 is organized as a regional level competition. The coffee samples received for the competition were categorized under their regional origin and were coded accordingly. The best coffees from each of the 13 coffee growing regions of India will be selected by a team of experienced cup tasters at National level. The outstanding coffees from among the selected coffees at National level will be selected for the award by the International Jury at the finals of the "Flavour of India - Cupping Competition-2007".

Unlike the previous competitions this year the "Flavour of India-Cupping Competition" for Arabica category is associated with the events of the oncoming India International Coffee Festival- 2007. The Cupping Competition for the Robusta category had been scheduled during the month of March 2007. The final round of Robusta Cupping Competition-2007 was held during SCAA Annual Conference and Exhibition at Long Beach, California.

A total of 140 Arabica samples were received for the competition during this year comprising 100 Arabica (washed and unwashed), 9 Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold (MNEB), 5 Organic Arabica, 10 Estate Branded coffees, 6 Monsooned coffees and 10 Pulped Sun Dried.

The preliminary round of cupping of the coffee samples has commenced on 8th February, 2007. The International jury analysed the coffees in the final round to select the best coffees from India under the following categories:-

  1. Fine Cup awards - 3 No. (Finest in Arabica, Best Specialty coffee & Best Estate Branded coffee)
  2. Best specialty coffee awards – 3 Nos. (Best MNEB, Best Monsooned Coffee and Best Organic Coffee)
  3. Best Arabica from each coffee growing region.
  4. Special awards: Best Arabica cherry from each region and Best Pulped Sun Dried coffee
  5. Estate Branded coffee, Best Arabica from small growers (<10 ha) category.
The most notable feature of this year competition is that there is a widespread representation of the coffee growing regions as well as more number of Arabica samples compared to previous years.

A total number of 96 Robusta coffee samples have been received from different regions for the Flavor of India - The Fine Cup Competition 2007. The region wise break up of the samples received is as follows:-

The 96 Robusta coffee samples comprises 49 Robusta parchment, 12 Robusta cherry, 10 pulped sun dried , 18 Robusta Kaapi Royale, 02 estate branded and 05 organic coffee samples. Out of these 96 samples, 80 samples were contributed by large growers, 13 samples by small growers and 3 samples by Board's Farms/CDFs.

Out of 96 samples, 2 samples were rejected at the physical evaluation level. From the remaining 94 samples, 48 samples were selected for the second round of cupping session held on 10th April 2007. Out of 48 samples, 14 samples were selected for final round cupping for the Fine Cup Award of Best Robusta/Specialty coffee by international jury held at Long Beach, California on 2nd May 2007.

The award distribution ceremony was held at Hotel Western Golden Sails, Long Beach, California on 5.5.2007. The list of final award winners and the regional award winners are prepared and published in "Indian Coffee" magazine. The award winners who have not participated at the award ceremony at Long beach and regional award winners were communicated to the concerned.

The Certificates of Award winners of Flavour of India - The Fine Cup Competition(Robusta) - 2007 was distributed in the Award Ceremony held on30th October 07 at The Atria Hotel, Bangalore along with the Conference of Karnataka Planters Association.

Arabica

Due to rains and overcast weather prevailing in the coffee growing areas and based on the request from the planters, the last date of receipt of coffee samples has been postponed to one week. Hence, the Arabica Competition has been rescheduled as follows:-

a) The Last date for Receipt of samples to Head Office from Extension Officers is 25th February 2008
b) The Physical Assessment will be held on 27th & 28th February 2008
c) Cup tasting of First level to be held on 3rd & 4th March 2008
d) Cup tasting of Second level to be held on 6th & 7th March 2008
